Home Learning to Drive Rules of the Road Driving Test

Driver's Education

Drivers' Education is offered in two phases. In the first phase students have nine weeks of classroom work (Drivers' Safety). Note: All students will be scheduled for safety class based on their age and the number of classes passed (State Law) and students must be 15 years of age for classroom instruction. This is followed by the second phase, four weeks of behind-the-wheel training (Drivers' Training). Note: All students must have 6 hours behind the wheel instruction in order to take the driving test before age 18. The top 12 students with the highest grades in safety class will drive during their P.E. hour in the school day; other students who pass safety will have the opportunity to drive after school. Student passing both phases will receive their blue slip which is done electronically by the state. This allows them to take the road test for their Drivers' License. Cost: initial instruction permit is $20.00 dollars (payable to Secretary of State) and the Lab Fee for Drivers' Training is $150.00 (payable to GCHS).

Purpose: To provide the materials and resources for a student to successfully complete Driver's Safety Class, Behind the Wheel Instruction, and Illinois State driving test.

Goals: To ensure the student has the proper knowledge and skills to become a successful and safe driver on the public roadways
