Statement from Superintendent Stephanie M. Cann

October 18, 2022

Dear GCSD9 Families,

There was an incident involving a confiscated weapon and a current Granite City Community Unit School District #9 night school student at the GCHS football game on  October 14, 2022. As a result, GCSD9 will administer the appropriate discipline to this student. GCSD9 is very thankful for the diligence and courage of our Granite City Police officers, auxiliary officers, and High School staff in coordinating a quick and effective response.

“The individual was apprehended without incident and was taken to the Granite City Police Department where he was held until his case was presented to the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office on October 17, 2022”, Granite City Police said in a statement.

Even though this unfortunate event was an attempt by the student to bypass GCSD9 existing safety and security plans, including metal detectors and bag searches at the stadium entrance, our District security prevented the weapon from entering the stadium.

The safety and security of students, staff, and community are always our priority at all school events, and GCSD9 will continue to implement appropriate measures to ensure this at all times.

Stephanie M. Cann, Ed.S.
GCSD9 Superintendent of Schools
