Dear GCSD9 Families,

We are deeply saddened to hear the news of the school shooting today at Central Visual and Performing Arts High School in south St. Louis. As educators and parents, these tragedies affect us all on such a personal level and our thoughts are with the members of that community.

We want to remind our Granite City Community Unit School District #9 families, that as a district, we are always dedicated to the safety and well-being of all our students and staff.

Each GCSD9 building has a detailed school safety plan, and we continue to monitor and update these plans in an effort to eliminate any oversights and to provide security throughout our schools. We have implemented law enforcement intruder drills and safety inspections at all GCSD9 buildings, and school specific safety trainings will continue throughout the school year.

With the recent addition of our District Student Safety Coordinator, the welfare of our students is at the forefront of our district priorities. Consistent communication between district leadership and local law enforcement continues and includes the presence of School Resource Officers. GCSD9 recently partnered with the Granite City Police Department hosting a Community Safety Awareness Presentation at Granite City High School.

Please continue to keep the students, teachers, staff and community at Central Visual and Performing Arts High School in your thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,

Stephanie M. Cann, Ed.S.
GCSD9 Superintendent of Schools
