Staff Spotlight: Amy Finazzo, Maryville

Every week throughout the 2025-26 school year, Granite City Community School District #9 will be highlighting a staff member for going above and beyond to give students a positive experience.

This week’s staff highlight is Amy Finazzo. 

Finazzo is a paraprofessional at Maryville Elementary School and has been working in GCSD9 for four years.

Where did you attend school?
I am a 2003 Granite City High School alumni, and will be graduating with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from McKendree University in December 2026.

What is your favorite memory working for GCSD9?
One of my favorite memories has to be watching students find their place and truly fit in. Seeing a student who may have felt shy or unsure at first begin to form friendships, join in activities, and feel comfortable being themselves is incredibly rewarding. Those moments of belonging, whether it is a student being invited to play at recess or confidently participating in class, shows how important a supportive school environment is.

What did you do before working at GCSD9?
I worked for a family owned roofing company in St. Louis before finding my calling here at GCSD9.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I love spending my free time outdoors, whether it’s going for a walk, enjoying fresh air, or simply taking in the scenery. Being outside helps me relax, recharge, and clear my mind. It’s a great way for me to stay active while also appreciating nature and taking a break from the busy-ness of everyday life.

What is your favorite part of being a paraprofessional?
My favorite part of being a paraprofessional is building meaningful connections with students and supporting them as they grow. I enjoy being able to work closely with them, offering encouragement and guidance both academically and socially. It’s especially rewarding to see their confidence increase and to know I played a small part in helping them succeed.

Who do you look up to?
I look up to my mom for her incredible determination and resilience. No matter what challenges life brings, she never gives up and continues to push forward with strength and determination. Her perseverance inspires me every day to stay motivated and face obstacles with the same positive mindset.
