Every week throughout the 2025-26 school year, Granite City Community School District #9 will be highlighting a staff member for going above and beyond to give students a positive experience.

This week’s staff highlight is Leah Schreiber

Schreiber is a Kindergarten teacher at Grigsby Elementary School and has worked in GCSD9 for 30 years.

Where did you go to school?
I grew up in Granite City by Wilson Park and graduated from GCHS.  After completing my bachelor’s degree at Eastern Illinois University, I returned to Granite City to begin my teaching career.

What is your favorite part about being a kindergarten teacher?
Kindergarten is truly a magical year for many reasons. At this age, students are eager to learn. They come to school each morning excited to participate and make the most of their day. Kindergarteners are honest and full of energy. They always keep things interesting- there is never a dull moment. One of the most rewarding parts of teaching this grade is watching their growth over the year, as they develop both academically and socially, gradually becoming more independent and responsible individuals.

What does a typical school day look like for you?
A typical day in kindergarten is structured, yet designed to be fun, active and engaging. The environment encourages hands-on-learning, where students grow through play, exploration and repeated practice of foundational skills. Among the most important of these skills are self-regulation and social-emotional development. Incorporating animals into our daily routine has proven to be a powerful way to support this growth. Through interactions with animals, children naturally develop patience, empathy and a sense of responsibility. These experiences provide meaningful opportunities for students to practice managing their emotions, working cooperatively  and building strong relationships. These are skills that are essential for success both in and out of the classroom.

Favorite memory while teaching?
I don't have just one favorite moment during my teaching career. The part I love about my teaching profession is that I have the opportunity to make life long impacts on the lives of children - there have been so many over the years. The most meaningful part is watching my students grow up into adults and seeing the paths they take. It's particularly special when I get to educate the children of former students, creating a full-circle moment that reminds me why I love what I do. Recently, a former student even reached out to share that they'll be starting a teaching position in our district next year. Moments like that are incredibly rewarding.

Hobbies?
In my leisure time my husband and I enjoy sharing interactive animal experiences with people. We find joy introducing a variety of animals to individuals and watching them create memorable moments. We also enjoy country dancing, visiting Nashville, Tennessee, and traveling.

Favorite Food?
I love ice cream!  It's always a special treat to look forward to.

Who do you look up to?
This year, my classroom has been truly amazing. I’ve looked forward to coming to school each day and being part of all the learning and growth. I couldn't have done it without my teacher's aide, Ms. Missy Gilmore. She goes above and beyond every single day, putting in more time than required and taking on responsibilities well beyond her job description. The kids absolutely adore her, and I genuinely enjoy working alongside her. She has made a lasting impact on our classroom. Another instrumental individual who has significantly contributed to my classroom is my husband, Dr. Edmar Schreiber. He generously spends many Friday afternoons reading to and interacting with my students, creating meaningful and engaging experiences. In addition, he creates short video clips featuring animal lessons and books, which further enrich our learning environment. His dedication and love for kids has definitely made a lasting impact on my students.
