Staff Spotlight: Michael Mendoza, Coolidge

Every week throughout the 2025-26 school year, Granite City Community School District #9 will be highlighting a staff member for going above and beyond to give students a positive experience.

This week’s staff highlight is Michael Mendoza. 

Mendoza is a custodian at Coolidge Junior High School and has worked in GCSD9 for 10 years.

Where did you go to school?
I graduated from Granite City High School in 1992.

What is your favorite part about being a custodian?
My favorite part about being a custodian is the relationships I get to build with the staff and students. Coming in and getting to connect with the staff that I see as my second family is amazing.

What does a day look like as a custodian?
Typically, when I come in, I start my day by turning on all the lights, as well as checking the boiler room. Then I set up the lunch room for breakfast, which includes setting up chairs, and preparing the kitchen. I then make my way out to the crosswalk to do cross walking duties, and the rest of the day is a toss-up which can consist of cleaning, fixing leaks, fixing appliances, mowing, handling deliveries, and anything that comes my way.

Hobbies?
I used to be a big sports player, but now I like to run and jog.

Favorite food?
I love authentic Mexican street tacos.
