Staff Spotlight: Scott Smallie, Coolidge
Chris Mitchell

By Brayden Cook '26

Every week throughout the 2025-26 school year, Granite City Community School District #9 will be highlighting a staff member for going above and beyond to give students a positive experience.

This week’s staff highlight is Scott Smallie.

Smallie is an 8th-grade social studies teacher, Coolidge Athletic Director, and head baseball coach at both GCHS and Coolidge. He has been teaching for 20 years and coaching since the 2006–07 school year.

What made you become a teacher?
I became a teacher because of the influential teachers and coaches in my life. I knew I wanted to coach, and teaching gave me that opportunity.

Where did you attend school and what degrees do you have?
I graduated from GCHS in 1998, then earned my associate’s degree while playing baseball at Lewis and Clark CC. I later majored in history/geography at SIUE, earning my teaching degree. I’m currently finishing my master’s in educational leadership at SIUE.

What is your favorite memory while coaching baseball?
It’s hard to choose, but coaching all three of my sons was a dream come true. I also value when former players come back to visit. Winning the Coolidge regional championship in 2022 was pretty special too.

What did you do before teaching?
I worked for the Park District on the ball diamond crew, reffed soccer, and cut grass at Legacy Golf Course. After college, I worked for Madison County Employment and Training, helping students earn diplomas.

What do you like to do outside of school?
I run three miles almost every day and enjoy outdoor activities. I love spending time with my family and dogs and am a big Cardinals and Mizzou baseball fan.

Favorite food?
Steak ’n Shake double cheeseburger and fries with an unlimited supply of Diet Coke.

Family?
My wife, Debbie, and we have four kids—Carter, Bennett, Brady, and Cate—and three dogs—Aggie, Archer, and Laina.

Who is someone you look up to and why?
Janice Janek mentored me my first year teaching at Coolidge. She always gave me advice on balancing family and teaching, and I’m grateful for her guidance.
