Staff Spotlight: Tim McChristian, GCHS

Every Friday throughout the 2026-27 school year, Granite City Community School District #9 will be highlighting a staff member for going above and beyond to give students a positive experience.

This week's staff spotlight features Granite City High School Principal Tim McChristian.

McChristian began his career in education in 1992 as a social studies teacher at Breese Mater Dei High School, where he also coached football, basketball, and track. He then spent 15 years at Collinsville High School as a social studies teacher and department chair while coaching football for 11 seasons and basketball for 12 seasons.

After moving into administration, he served as assistant principal at Dupo Jr./Sr. High School from 2009 to 2019 before becoming principal at Du Quoin High School, where he served for four years. In 2023, McChristian was named principal of GCHS and is now entering his fourth year leading the Warriors.

Get to know Principal McChristian as he shares what inspired his career in education, his advice for incoming freshmen, and his vision for helping every Warrior succeed.

What drew you to Granite City School District #9, and what has stood out to you most since joining the district? 
I was familiar with the school and town from my days attending and teaching at Collinsville.  Over the years I feel some of my closest friends were from Granite City.  I have always appreciated the work ethic and closeness associated with Granite City.

Can you share what inspired you to become an educator and eventually pursue school leadership? 
My mom was a teacher.  I always wanted to coach, but felt the importance of being a teacher first.  I also wanted a career that would align with my son's schedule to be able to be off with him.  I found I truly enjoyed watching students and athletes enter high school as freshmen and watch them grow into young adults.

What advice would you give to incoming freshmen as they begin their high school journey at Granite City High School? 
Get involved in as much as you can, sports, clubs, organizations.  Maximize the most of your high school experience.  It will be over before you realize it. 

High school is an important time in a student's life. What do you hope every student experiences before they graduate from your school? 
Experience of a good education.  Experience things you would not normally try (clubs, organizations, sports). Make friends with those whom you had never met before and watch those friendships grow in long lasting relationships. 

When you're away from work, what are some of your favorite hobbies or interests?
I try to work out 4-5x a week.  I enjoy boating and working around the house.  I enjoy golf but I am terrible at it.  I also enjoy just spending time with my wife and our blended family.
